There's more to American music than you thought.

So this website has been a long time coming. A while back I took the decision to not only up and move home but to completely change the direction of my work too. I’m 99% sure it was the right thing to do. That last 1% represents those “what the hell am I doing?” moments. For me, they’re usually a product of mulling things over too much and getting lost in my own head.

One of my big aims with launching the website was to return to my roots in music and make more time for some seriously good tunes – and trust me, there are plenty out there if you know where to look.

It turns out including music as part of the big picture was a good move as it’s helped drown out those “am I going to screw things up?” and “oh crap, what have I done?” moments, and one band in particular has inadvertently served as the soundtrack to this part of my life.

Residing in the ‘alternative’ section of Apple Music, Flagship is an indie-rock band from North Carolina. I say they’re a band but more accurately they’re a duo, Drake Margolnick (vocals & guitar) and Michael Finster (drums). Together they manage to create a dreamy, guitar-driven indie sound that you’d never imagine comes from America’s Upland South – their sound could easily sit happily amongst British bands like Coldplay or Radiohead.

I’m sharing here the first Flagship track I ever heard. ‘I Want You’ has some serious energy behind it and really showcases Margolnick’s vocals (at times I think he sounds like Chris Isaak) and Finster’s drumming. This is definitely a high energy, crank up the volume and jump on the furniture playing air-drums track. It’s gotten me through the ups and downs of the past few months and it’ll no doubt get me through many more.
